Dedicated to creating an original, creative and uncompromising sonic spectrum. Steel Box Theories is the brainchild and musical project from composer, performer and producer Luke Tetlow.
Steel Box Theories draws from an array of different musical genres and influences; from the stark minimal industrial sounds of Nine Inch Nails to the progressive and experimental sounds of bands such as Tool, Pink Floyd, and Primus. We apply elements of discord and atonality found in the works of classical composers such as Bela Bartok, through to the harsh aural brutality found in modern metal bands such as Korn, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon and Il Nino.
Steel Box Theories blends all of these elements and more into an original, creative and bewildering aural assault; that will leave the audience hungry for more.
Wow… 6 and a half years down the line and I have finally managed to finish my very first debut album as Steel Box Theories – I must say I’m pretty f*cking stoked. It’s not been easy and at times I didn’t think I was going to finish it, but with dedication and just being generally stubborn It’s finally here:
I have decided to use CD baby to distribute the album digitally so you should be able to purchase the album pretty much anywhere, and I have launched a bit of an advertising campaign with them too, so we will see how that pans out. All that’s left to do now is promote, promote, promote!
The album description is below:
6 and a half years in the making, I present Steel Box Theories debut album for your aural pleasure. Like a sledge hammer to the face or a rhino tickling your testes, this album is not for the faint of heart.
Drawing from influences such as Nine Inch Nails and Primus through to the classical compositions of Bela Bartok, the album is a melting pot for multiple genres, and as I have complete creative control over this release I could do whatever I wanted.
This is a true DIY project everything you hear has been recorded, produced and mixed by me (Lawless Luke). So I really do hope you enjoy the album and if you don’t please do go on the internet and bitch about it to someone who gives a sh*t…
So interesting times… I’m also going to be getting on the road and doing some solo performances under the name of Lawless Luke, the live set up is pretty unique – I use a loop pedal acoustic instruments like a Cajon, acoustic guitar and even a resonator blues guitar! The style is a bit different to SBT and is certainly more accessible kind of blues biker rock thing going on you can check out my soundcloud page below if you fancy a listen:
So after quite a few months of gigging to dwindling audience numbers due to a variety of different reasons, poor venue event promotion, lack of interest in live music, etc I have decided to take matters into my own hands and create an event. Working as a promoter, performer and events organiser I have put together an event to help inject some much needed interest back into live music and creative arts whilst at the same time raising money and awareness for Cancer Research UK.
The event is focusing on raising money for Cancer Research UK whilst also promoting creative and experimental music and visual art in Coventry.
The focus of the night will be creativity and has to achieve the following:
Be a platform for creative artists; visual artists and musicians to showcase their work. Create more of a ‘scene’ for live music and creative arts in Coventry, Raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK
The event will be taking place on October the 12th 2013 at a live music venue in Coventry.
All entries must be received by the 30th of August 2013 to be considered for the event, so if you do want to be involved please send us an email with links to your work etc: email@example.com
If you would like to make a donation and help in the fight against cancer, please visit:
In other news I am working on some new material and pushing ahead with the debut album, we have also had a request from a fellow Soundclouder to remix two of our songs! So I’m excited to see how that turns out 🙂
It has been a while since I have sent any kind of update, I must apologise this is purely because I have been busy gigging, working on the debut album and writing some new material which as you can imagine has kept me very busy 🙂
Anyway I thought it was about time I treat you to some new material, I completed this piece some time ago but have been keeping it under wraps until closer to the release date of the debut album; I’m hoping to finish the production by the summer of this year and then the release will be when funds allow…donations would be gratefully received :-).
It features myself performing all instruments on the record with some bass guitar courtesy of Dean Vermeire, as usual I composed, recorded and produced the song. It is one of our more mellow tracks and the subject matter is based around my increased disdain for the breaking down of respect and moral values in modern society, the Birmingham riots (and other riots that took place in 2011) are a clear example and good evidence to support the subject matter and concepts banded about in this track.
It is certainly one of our favourite songs on the album, and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoy playing it. You can listen to the new track via the below reverbnation link:
In other news we have three gigs this month, two at The Fern and Fallow in Cannock and one at The Shed in Leicester. Check our gig listings on Reverbnation and do come along it’s always good to see supporters at our shows. We have also decided that we will be looking for a drummer to join our ranks in the next few months, please get in touch if you know anyone who may be interested performing with us.
That’s all for now, I will continue to work on the debut album and I’m looking forward to Spring so I can get the BBQ’s on the go!
As you may know from following our Twitter feed @steelbox007 we are busy booking gigs for the rest of 2012, and early 2013. Our next gig is on the 17th of November at Eddies Rock Bar in Birmingham so we hope you can make that, we have also managed to secure a gig at the Dublin Castle in Camden, London on the 4th of December 2012 with Bug Bear promotions which is great news for us.
I am busy working hard on our debut album which I plan to have ready by the middle of next year, the new track I am working on is called Do Unto Others or Die (cheery number I know!) and at 8 minutes long it is proving to be a beast of a track!
I wanted to do a quick feature on the first track of the album ‘Dungeon of Steel’, this was written, recorded, produced and performed by me and I wanted to evoke a feeling of entrapment and brutality in the song which you can listen to below:
We had some artwork created to compliment/enhance our track “Dungeon of Steel”. The concept for this artwork was put together by Dean Vermeire, this photo was taken by me using a Canon EOS 300D, post production and composition was completed by our good friend David Jordan. You can view the artwork for this track from our Flickr feed:
We also completed a live rehearsal video for this track with ProveMotion which can be viewed on Youtube, here you can see how the track has been adapted and arranged for live performance and makes prominent use of a Boss RC-50 loopstation:
We hope you are all well and enjoying this late summer!
We have been busy at the Steel Box Theories base camp recently with no less than four gigs in two weeks! We have met some great people playing at The Roadhouse, Birmingham ArtsFest and Cargo in London at The RPIXfactor battle of the bands and no doubt some of you new subscribers will have met us at one of these events, so thanks for joining and supporting us!
We are currently busy planning gigs for late 2012 and early 2013, so if you want to see us at a venue check our gig listing or suggest some venues that we can contact to book a gig J. We are also looking into getting some kind of management or agent involved so we are busy researching that, again any suggestions would be appreciated.
And finally I am still busy working on our debut album; we are toying with the idea of using some kind of voluntary donation framework like Pledge music or Kickstart to help with the costs of funding, more to follow on that soon…and finally we are looking to arrange a short tour of the UK and Europe to coincide with the album release in spring/summer 2013, so it’s all go go go!
